Michele Owens, B.A., M.A.,is a lifelong dancer who grew up in her Mother’s dance studio and has been teaching countless students for over 30 years. A graduate of the University of Texas, Michele received an M.A. from the University of Utah where she was awarded the Dee R. Winterton Award for Excellence in Dance. One of fve teaching artists in the country chosen for the 1993 ArtCorps Project, Michele believes in the universal power of dance to touch people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. This drives her work as a teaching artist in the public sector, which includes WINGS, a dance residency project with Life Skill students from Crockett HIgh School. WINGS performs for hundreds of school children every Spring. In 2005, Michele, with WINGS, was the featured artist for the Dallas Dance for the Planet Festival. Michele has also been directing the preschool dance program at Mt. Olive Lutheran School since 2006. In 2008, WINGS II was created to bring dance classes to people with disabilities to the community at large. This is the 20th anniversary of Michele’s Modern Dance School for youth at Café Dance. Innovative and loving, Michele creates an environment where students can come to know and value themselves through meaningful experiences in Modern Dance Express – Modern technique develops expressive use of the body with a focus on body awareness, problem solving, strength, flexibility, and self expression.
Create -Students are creators during improvisation and composition exercises. The creative process is experienced through exploration with the fundamental elements of movement.
Collaborate – Students learn how to support each other and share diverse ideas when they work with others. They develop sensitivity and respect toward each other as they become important members of a group.
